City-by-city shipping notes

Virginia has three busy areas: Hampton Roads, Richmond and Northern Virginia, plus the Blue Ridge to the west. Notes on the cities we ship to and from most:

Virginia Beach

The state’s largest city, at the end of I-264. A big military and beach-retiree market.

Chesapeake

South of Norfolk with easy access to I-64 and I-464, and plenty of room for a carrier in newer neighborhoods.

Arlington

Right across the Potomac from D.C. Dense streets and parking garages, so we usually set a nearby meeting spot.

Richmond

The capital, where I-95 and I-64 cross. Most Virginia to Florida and Georgia loads pass through here.

Norfolk

Home to the largest naval base in the world. PCS moves in and out of Norfolk are a big part of our Virginia work.

Newport News

On the Peninsula along I-64, with shipyard and military families moving in and out year-round.

Alexandria

Northern Virginia on I-95 and I-495. Old Town’s narrow streets aren’t built for carriers.

Hampton

Next to Langley Air Force Base on I-64. Military moves are common.

Suffolk

The largest city in Virginia by land area, mostly open roads and easy for a carrier to reach.

Roanoke

Western Virginia on I-81, in the Blue Ridge. Winter weather in the mountains can push pickup dates.

Hampton Roads and Military Moves

Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Hampton and Newport News together make up Hampton Roads, one of the biggest military areas in the country. Navy, Air Force, Army and Coast Guard families move in and out all year, often with short notice. If you have orders, tell us your report date when you ask for a quote so the carrier can plan around it. More on military car shipping.

Northern Virginia and the D.C. Area

Northern Virginia traffic on I-95, I-66 and the Beltway can move a driver’s arrival by hours. The driver will call ahead, so keep your phone close during the pickup window. If you live in a high-rise or a tight townhouse community, plan to meet at a nearby parking lot.

Open or Enclosed in Virginia?

Open transport is the standard choice. In winter, I-81 and the western mountains see snow and road salt. For a classic or high-value car, enclosed transport keeps it clean and covered.

FAQ

Virginia Questions

Do you ship cars for military families in Hampton Roads?

Yes. Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Hampton and Newport News see a lot of PCS moves, and we ship cars to and from all of them. See military car shipping for what to have ready.

I’m moving to Virginia. What do I need to do with my car?

Virginia asks new residents to title and register their vehicle within 30 days. Virginia also requires a yearly safety inspection, and cars in Northern Virginia need an emissions inspection. Check the Virginia DMV for your situation.

Can a carrier get to my place in Northern Virginia?

In the suburbs, usually. In Arlington, Alexandria and other dense areas close to D.C., a full-size carrier often can’t fit, so the driver meets you at a nearby lot or wide street.

How much does it cost to ship a car to or from Virginia?

It depends on the distance, the vehicle, open or enclosed, and the season. We don’t post made-up averages. Get an exact quote or call (424) 453-1800.
