How Auto Transport Works
Shipping a car comes down to three steps: get a quote, book your pickup, and receive your vehicle. Here’s what happens at each one, and how we match you with a vetted carrier.
Three Steps
Each step in detail
Step 1: Get Your Quote
Tell us where the vehicle is, where it’s going, what it is, and when it’s ready. You can fill out the form or call (424) 453-1800. Mention anything that affects the price: a car that doesn’t run, a lifted truck, oversized tires, or a need for enclosed transport.
Your price is based on your actual route, vehicle and dates. Be wary of any quote that’s far below the others. Here’s why lowball quotes fall apart.
Step 2: Book Your Pickup
Once the price works for you, we book it. We match your vehicle with a vetted, licensed carrier that runs your route and has the right equipment, then set your pickup window.
Before pickup day:
- Wash the car and take dated photos of every side.
- Leave about a quarter tank of fuel, or a third to a half charge for an EV.
- Remove personal items, toll tags and loose accessories.
- Make sure you, or someone you trust, can be there.
On pickup day, the driver calls ahead. You inspect the car together, note any existing scratches or dents on the bill of lading, sign, and hand over the keys.
Step 3: Receive Your Vehicle
The driver calls ahead before delivery. Meet them at your address, or at a nearby spot if a big truck can’t reach your street. Walk around the car with the driver and compare it to the pickup report. If everything looks right, sign, and you’re done. If you see new damage, note it on the bill of lading before you sign.
How We Work With Carriers
Shelby Auto Transport is an auto transport company. We don’t own trucks. Instead, we work with licensed carriers across the country. That means we can ship any state to any state, because we’re not limited to one fleet’s routes.
Every carrier must have active operating authority and insurance with the FMCSA. You can ask to see your carrier’s insurance certificate before pickup. Shelby Auto Transport is registered with FMCSA too: USDOT 3813762, MC 1377368.
How It Works: Questions
Who actually moves my car?
A licensed, insured carrier, usually an owner-operator or a small trucking company that runs your route. We’re the auto transport company that finds and books that carrier, and your point of contact throughout.
How soon can my car be picked up?
It depends on your route, the season and how flexible your dates are. Busy interstate routes fill fastest. Your quote includes a pickup window. If you’re in a hurry, ask about expedited shipping.
What is a bill of lading?
It’s the inspection report and receipt for your shipment. At pickup, you and the driver note the car’s condition and both sign. At delivery, you check the car against it and sign again. Note any new damage on it before the driver leaves.
Do I pay up front?
Ask how much is due and when before you book, and read the terms before you sign anything with any car shipping company. Call (424) 453-1800 if you have questions.
