Lowball Car Shipping Quotes: The Bait and Switch

How a too-good quote turns into a higher price, and how to spot it.

You collect four quotes. Three are close together. One is far lower. It’s tempting. It’s also the most common way people get burned in car shipping.

How the Bait and Switch Works

  1. The bait. A company quotes a price well below what carriers actually accept on your route, to win your booking.
  2. The wait. Your car is posted for carriers at that low price. Carriers pass on it, because better-paying loads are available. Your pickup window comes and goes.
  3. The switch. You get a call: “No carrier will take it at this price. We need more.” By now your move date is close, and you’ve lost the time to shop around. So you pay.

The final price often ends up at or above what the honest quotes were in the first place, and you’ve lost days or weeks.

Why It Works

Carriers are independent businesses. They choose loads based on pay, distance and how well a load fits their route. No company can force a carrier to take a car below the going rate. A lowball quote isn’t a deal. It’s a price that hasn’t met reality yet.

How to Spot a Lowball Quote

  • It’s far below the others for the same route, vehicle and dates.
  • It comes back instantly, without questions about your car or its condition.
  • The company asks for a deposit before a carrier is assigned, with no clear refund terms.
  • The terms say the price is an “estimate” that can change, without saying when or why.

How to Protect Yourself

  • Give every company the same, complete details so the quotes are comparable.
  • Ask directly: “Is this a price a carrier will accept on my route right now?”
  • Ask what happens if no carrier takes the car at that price.
  • Get the price and terms in writing before you pay anything.
  • Check the company’s USDOT and MC numbers on the FMCSA website.
