A car shipping quote is usually one number, but a lot goes into it. Knowing what moves the price helps you compare quotes fairly and spot one that doesn’t add up.
The Big Factors
Distance and route
Longer trips cost more in total, but usually less per mile. The route matters as much as the miles: two big cities on a main interstate are cheaper to connect than a small town far from one, because more carriers already run that way.
Vehicle size and weight
A pickup or a full-size SUV takes more space and weight capacity than a compact car. Lift kits, oversized tires, roof racks and dually wheels can push the price up further.
Running or not
A car that can’t drive onto the trailer needs a carrier with a winch, and more time to load. Expect it to cost more.
Open or enclosed
Enclosed transport costs more because the trailers carry fewer cars and there are fewer of them. See Is enclosed worth it?
Season and demand
Prices rise when demand does: summer moving season, and snowbird season on routes into Florida and Arizona in the fall and out of them in spring. Holidays and bad weather can tighten things too.
Timing
Flexible dates give you more carrier options. A tight window or expedited pickup costs more.
Fuel prices
Diesel is one of a carrier’s biggest costs. When it climbs, rates follow.
Fees to Ask About
Every company structures its pricing differently. Before you book, ask directly:
- Is this the total price, or are there deposits, booking fees or other charges?
- How much is due at booking, at pickup, and at delivery, and how can I pay each part?
- What happens to the price if my dates change, or if the car doesn’t run?
- Are there charges for storage, extra stops or a failed pickup?
Get the answers in writing. A reputable company won’t mind.
Why the Cheapest Quote Can Cost More
Carriers choose which loads to take based on what they pay. A quote set far below what carriers accept on your route may sit unclaimed until the price is raised. That’s the classic bait and switch. A realistic quote is the one that gets your car moving.
