How Student Car Shipping Works
- Get a quote with your home address, the campus or apartment address, and your move-in date.
- Pick a pickup window a few days to a week before you leave, so the car arrives close to when you do.
- Hand over the car at home. A parent can do this if you’ve already left.
- Meet the driver near campus, inspect the car together and sign.
Timing Around the School Year
College lanes get busy at the same times every year: late summer for move-in, and late spring for move-out. If your dates fall in those weeks, book early. If the car isn’t needed the first week of classes, a slightly later pickup can be easier to schedule.
Big college towns we ship to include Athens, Georgia; Tallahassee, Florida; Austin and Lubbock, Texas; Knoxville, Tennessee; Columbus, Ohio; State College and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Syracuse, New York; and Tempe, Arizona.
Tips for Students and Parents
- Check the car’s registration and insurance before it leaves home.
- Find out where your school lets you park, and whether you need a permit.
- Take dated photos of the car before pickup.
- Leave about a quarter tank of fuel.
Student Car Shipping Questions
Can a parent book and pay for the shipment?
Yes. Parents book shipments for students all the time. Just tell us who will be at pickup and delivery, since someone 18 or older needs to sign the inspection report with the driver at each end.
Can the carrier deliver to my dorm?
Campuses often restrict big trucks, so delivery is usually at a nearby parking lot or a wide street off campus. Tell us the school and we’ll plan a spot.
When should I book for move-in?
Two to three weeks ahead of move-in, if you can. Late August and early September are busy on college lanes, and so are May and early June heading home.
Can I pack my stuff in the car?
No. Carriers can’t haul household goods inside the car, and personal items generally aren’t covered by the carrier’s insurance. Ship your boxes separately.
