Last-Minute Car Shipping Cancellations

Why bookings fall apart days before pickup, and how to avoid it.

Everything is booked. Your flight is set, the movers are coming, and two days before pickup, the car shipping company calls to cancel, or simply stops answering. Here’s why it happens and how to avoid being left without a carrier.

Why Last-Minute Cancellations Happen

  • The price was never realistic. A lowball quote won the booking, but no carrier would take the car at that price, so the company gives up close to the date. How lowball quotes fall apart.
  • Overbooking. Some companies take more bookings than they can realistically fill for a given week.
  • A carrier backs out. Trucks break down, routes change, and drivers sometimes take a better-paying load. A good company finds a replacement; a poor one just tells you it fell through.
  • Unrealistic dates. A rural pickup, a peak week, or a very tight window that was never likely to be filled.

How to Avoid Getting Stranded

  • Book two to three weeks ahead, more in summer and snowbird season.
  • Choose a realistic price over the lowest one.
  • Ask how tight your date is. “How likely is it you’ll get a carrier for my dates on this route?” A straight answer is a good sign.
  • Ask what happens if a carrier backs out. Will they find a replacement, and how quickly?
  • Read the cancellation terms, including whether your deposit is refunded if they can’t fill your dates.
  • Build in flexibility. Even a few days of wiggle room on pickup makes a big difference.
  • Stay in touch. Confirm a few days before pickup that a carrier is assigned.

If It Happens Anyway

Ask the company for a firm new date, or for a refund of anything you’ve paid if they can’t deliver. Then get fresh quotes right away, and tell each company your deadline so they can tell you honestly whether they can meet it. If time is very short, ask about expedited shipping.
